The Special Local Government Congress of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to elect National Delegates for the presidential primary election was successfully held in Enugu State yesterday.
Seventeen Ad-Hoc Delegates from the 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the State were elected at the congress.
Acting State Chairman of the party, Elder David Aja and the five-man Local Government Congress Committee from the PDP national headquarters, Abuja, supervised the Local Government Congress.
Members of the Committee included Barr. Gabe Igboko, who is the Chairman, Alh. Kabiru Bala Maitama, and Hon. Lawal Mammadu.
Others were Chief Olumide Olusuyi and Rose Confidence Alozie.
Reports from the 17 council areas indicated that the exercise was peaceful as the three-man delegates elected during the November 1, 2014 Ward Congresses in the 260 Electoral Wards in the State participated fully at the designated centres and elected one delegate from each of the 17 LGAs in line with the party’s guideline.
Those elected as National Delegates from Enugu State during Saturday’s congress were: Enugu North LGA- Hon. Chuka Ayogu, Enugu East – Hon. Edward Nnaji; Isiuzo- Prof. Samuel Ugwu, Nkanu East- Hon. Anayo Ede, Nkanu West- Dr. Chika Okenwa Ani, and Enugu South- Hon. Emma Okenwa, Nsukka – Hon. Charles Ugwu, Udenu- Barr. Charles Ugwu, and Igbo-Etiti- Barr. Simeon Ngwu. Others elected were: Igboeze North- Amb. Fidel Ayaogu, Uzo Uwani – Prof. Mathias Ofili Ugwudoha, Igboeze South – Prof. Osita Ogbu, Aninri – Barr. Eric Ogudu, Awgu – Barr. Eze O. Eze, Ezeagu – Hon. Okey Ozoani, Oji River – Engr. Bethel Onyenyiri, and Udi – Dr. Simon Eneh .
There were no skirmishes at any of the centres as the delegates and party officials conducted the exercise in a very peaceful manner. Party chieftains, stalwarts and supporters who were present at most of the centres, hailed the officials for the smooth conduct of the exercise, which they described as a demonstration of the unity and peace that exist among members of the party in the State.
Speaking at the end of congresses, the Acting Chairman of the State chapter of the PDP, Elder David Aja commended party faithful and delegates for the smooth and peaceful conduct of the exercise, noting that the State was now ready for the forthcoming party primaries at both the State and national levels.
He said: “Enugu State chapter of the PDP is on course to retaining power in the State and produce credible representatives at the National Assembly come 2015. And as you know, we are determined to contribute to the Transformation Agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan by ensuring that he is reelected both at the National Convention/Presidential Primary and the 2015 general election in line with the position of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the PDP”.
Also speaking, Chairman of the PDP five-man Local Government Congress Committee, Barr. Gabe Igboko, commended the people of Enugu State for their cooperation towards the successful conduct of the exercise.
The Committee, which earlier met with the officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Enugu, congratulated the Enugu State PDP for the successful congress. Anxiety had earlier mounted in the state following alleged attempts by some interest groups and individuals to frustrate the exercise and kill the truce brokered by president Goodluck Jonathan , the National chairman of the party Adamu Muazu and other stakeholders, last Thursday night.
Supporters of the governor has alleged a plot to abort the congress, and even claimed that no congress took place.
