LATEST UPDATE On Gistagain: SON offers free certification to 1000 SMEs
In a bid to promote standard in the operation of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the country, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has promised free certification for over 1000 SMEs that would apply to it.
At the celebration of this year’s World Standards Day (WSD) in Lagos, the Director General of SON, Dr. Ikem Joseph Odumodu, who identified SMEs as the engine room of any nation’s economic growth, said the process would afford Nigerian products opportunity to compete favourably in the international market.
The WSD, held this year under the global theme, “Standards Levels the Playing Field, and a Nigerian theme, Standards for Global Competitiveness, Leveling the Playing Field for SMEs” was marked with a one-day stakeholders’ forum for SME operators in Nigeria.
Odumodu added that SMEs are the powerful tool that would create enabling business environments, spur economic growth and help mitigate and adapt to climate change in the complex international environment.
On the issues of standardisation, Odumodu explained that international standards represent the consensus view of the world’s leading experts in industry sectors ranging from energy, utilities, energy, efficiency to transportation, management systems, climate change, healthcare, safety as well as information and communication technology.
