LATEST UPDATE: Pomp as Akande-Adeola takes another shot at Reps seat
Chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), supporters, friends, relatives and political associates of the Leader of House of Representatives, Hon. Mulikat Akande-Adeola, in a rare show of solidarity recently converged on Recreation Club Ogbomoso, Oyo State to be part of the epoch-making declaration of the lawmaker who is seeking re-election to the lower chamber of the National Assembly.
The legislator, who is seeking a third term election to represent her Ogbomoso North, Ogbomoso South and Oriire Federal Constituency, declared at the epoch-making event: “My ambition is not being pursued on the basis of personal interest or vanity but because I have something unique which I have been offering and hope to continue to offer which is total service and responsibility for the masses most especially the good people of Ogbomoso land”.
Putting paid to speculations on her next political move, she said: “In the name of almighty God I wish to formally declare my interest to once again contest under our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party to represent Ogbomoso North, South and Orire. In giving the mandate, I call on all of you who have not registered to do so. I wish to remind you that it is not only about Mulikat Akande Adeola, we must deliver all our candidates especially our President, Dr.Goodluck Jonathan because without the central government, there is little or nothing the state or local government can do”.
Cataloguing her modest contributions, Hon. Mulikat said a total of 84 employable youths secured gainful employment at the federal level while solar powered boreholes were sunk at 132 locations and handpump boreholes in 26 communities. Other areas of intervention, according to her include rural electrification in seven locations, solar powered streetlights in 24 locations, road construction, ICT training, skills acquisition programme, building of blocks of classrooms, poverty alleviation for over 600 people in the last three and a half years, empowerment of 150 associations, bursary to over 500 students, four-year scholarship to 25 students through Jokodolu Foundation in 2014, donation of ten vehicles to party faithful, 14-seater bus to Owode Police Area Command and five vehicles to NURTW among others.
Speaking at the event, the erstwhile Chief of Staff in Oyo State, Dr. Saka Balogun urged politicians to make their campaigns issue-based and passed a vote of confidence in Hon. Mulikat. He described her as a performer extra-ordinaire, a replica of her father who he regarded as an epitome of wisdom, resilience and hardwork. Of the five canons of politics which he listed as population, concentration, networking with government, wealth, sheer violence, and solidarity, Balogun concluded that the fifth is the magic wand the Ogbomoso people deploy to emerge victorious. This much he solicited for Hon. Mulikat’s re- election.
On her part, former Women Affairs Commissioner in Oyo State, Mrs. Deborah Oyelade said she bowed to a superior argument of Ogbomoso first and above any personal interest. “When women are placed in position of authority and make good use of it, the onus is on other women to support them”, she counselled.
Beyond any parochial sectional interest the fate of the Yoruba in the political equation of Nigeria was the major concern of Chairman of FERMA, Engineer Jide Adeniji, who made a passionate appeal to Hon. Mulikat’s constituents to ensure she returns to the House in view of her chances of clinching the speakership.
From the Igbo community, Hausa community and the students’ body, it was a chorus of “let the good work continue”.
